Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology began with the inception of the college in the academic year 1956-57. The Founder Principal, Rev. Fr. Gabriel CMI, a Zoology faculty, was honoured with the Padmabhushan. Elevation of the Department to post graduate level happened in 1961 and it became a recognized research centre in 1973 with affiliation from University of Calicut. The Department is proud of having an excellent museum, which attracts many a student from the college and outside. The Department has a strong alumni association under the name ZAAC.

The Department runs three programmes viz., UG, PG and PhD. The intake for UG programme is 36 and for PG, it is 12. PhD admission is based purely on merit and is done in accordance with the number of research supervisors and reported vacancies under them. There are six faculty members in the Department and all of them have a PhD degree. Many are with excellent exposure in reputed Universities and Institutes in Asia, Europe and the US.

The exam results over the years have been excellent with 100% pass for PG programme and consistently around 90% for UG programme. Of late, the number of students qualifying the NET/JRF exam has been increasing steadily. In 2013-14 academic year, department received DST-FIST support. External funding agencies extended financial assistance of more than two crores in the last three decades for running research projects. Some of the faculty members have achieved recognitions like Prof. M M Ghani Best Teacher Award, FLAIR international fellowship programme and DST young scientist award.

A total of thirteen research supervisors, all with approval of University of Calicut, are spearheading the research activities in the centre. A full-fledged research block was inaugurated on 1st Jan 2020. There are five well established research labs in the Department. 26 scholars guided by research supervisors of the Department were awarded with PhD degree from various Universities in the state and outside. Nearly 50 research scholars are working for their doctoral degree, right now, in the research labs of the department. The Department has about 300 research publications to the credit.
