Department of English

The Department of English came into existence with the inception of the College in 1956. Initially General English was taught to the students of all the degree programmes in the College. From 1998 onwards, the Department offers a degree programme in Functional English. B.A. in Functional English is an Advanced Level English Programme with an interactive approach. This programme concentrates on application of English in major areas like Media, Business, Translation, Creative writing, Advertising, Film and focuses on imparting basic language skills: LSRW (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing). Besides, the programme fosters human values through exposure to major works of literature in English and stimulating self-exploration and self-expression. It also aims to mould a generation of techno-savvy students competent in tapping ICT and its applications thereby equipping them for a variety of careers. After completing the programme, the learners can opt for Masters in English Language and Literature/ Communicative English/ Linguistics/ ELT, or can channelize their tastes to Mass Communication /Media Studies because the programme includes courses in these subjects. The core and complementary papers like Business English, Advertising Theory and Practice, Creative Writing and ELT have many practical elements to kindle learners’ tastes to find great careers in teaching/ the corporate sector.

B.A. Functional English programme, a multi-focal academic programme, aims at equipping the students with excellent professional communicative skills in English Language. The programme has been designed to enable the learners to tackle international language tests such as IELTS, TOEFL and CLB by providing them training in the Language Lab of the Department.The renowned international poet and writer Dr K Sachidhanandhan and Rev. Fr. Francis Kurissery, former Principal of Christ College and the present director of Amala College of medical Sciences were members of the faculty.

Many of our students have brought laurels to the college and are presently celebrities in various fields in media and films. Many of our former students have cleared NET and JRF due to the sound base in English language and literature they have gained from the Department.
