The MSc Botany Programme (Self-financing) was started in 2013 with “Environmental Biology and Biodiversity Conservation” and “Genetic Engineering” as special papers. The Department has also implemented the Choice-based Credit System for grading M.Sc., which offers flexibility in the structuring and assessment of courses. The Department has Tissue Culture and Biochemistry labs that are well equipped with latest instruments. Projection facilities are also available in classrooms to facilitate student learning with visual representation of concepts discussed in class. The Department also maintains an enormous collection of museum and herbarium specimens that facilitate practical learning of the subject and a connection with the specimens of nature that students study. MSc course is limited to 12 students with a marginal increase of 17. The students with 50% marks at UG level are eligible for admission. The department has a strong alumni. Many of our alumni are working in various research projects in reputed institutions like Kerala Agricultural University, KFRI, TBGRI and several private pharmaceutical companies.
The Department also regularly organizes field trips, study tours and botanical excursions that help in bringing about the holistic development of students. One of our alumni qualified CSIR UGC Net examination and one qualified Agricultural NET. One of our students is doing PhD at Guruvayoorappan College, Kozhikode. Many alumni of this department are pursuing their careers in higher education in different institutions. The Department also regularly organizes workshops, conferences, seminars, and symposia with participation of faculty as well as students from other universities and colleges. These activities help students and are instrumental not only in keeping them abreast of current developments in research in the discipline but also in developing organizational skills eligible for admission.
