Department of Geology and Env Science

The Department of Geology was started in 1981, the year that marked the silver jubilee of the College. Dr. A. V. George, who went on to become the Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, was the first faculty member.  In 1984, Dr.R.V. Rajan and Dr. S. Sreekumar joined the department. Postgraduate course in Environmental Sciences started in the year 2000 and the name of the department got changed to Department of Geology and Environmental Sciences. The Department got recognized as a research centre of the University of Calicut in the year 2010. A total of 4 students completed their PhD under the guidance of faculty of the department and 9 students are pursuing it. At present there are 12 faculty members of whom 4 are research guides under Calicut University.  The post graduate programme in Applied Geology was started in 2014 and an additional B.Sc. batch with Chemistry and Physics as complementary subjects was started in 2017. The Government of Kerala sanctioned an integrated 5 year postgraduate programme in Geology in 2020.

The Department has a well-equipped lab including Environmental science lab, Geology museum and Geoinformatics laboratories. The students of the Department consistently secure high ranks in the university examinations. All the programmes have now been shifted to autonomous mode while degree certificates are awarded by University of Calicut. The faculty members of the department regularly get external funding through research projects from state and central government agencies. The Department has also organized national and international colloquiums, conferences and workshops. The Department has Memorandum of Understanding for academic and research collaboration with national and international institutions like Leibniz Institute of Applied Geophysics [Germany], University of Zululand [South Africa] and PAMA for archaeological studies at Thiruvananthapuram.
