The Department of Sanskrit came into existence in 1976 as Sanskrit was added to the Pre- University course of the University of Calicut. Sanskrit is offered as one of the additional languages at the Degree level. Students with good background in Sanskrit at the plus two level may take Sanskrit as an additional language for Degree Programme. The department helps those who are eager to study Sanskrit, but have not studied it earlier, with Bridge Course. From the very beginning eminent scholars and academicians were appointed as the faculty-members. Dr. J. Prasad, former Vice-Chancellor of Sree Sankara University, Kalady, Dr. T. K. Narayanan, former Registrar of the University of Calicut, former Director of Academic Staff College Calicut University, present Vice Chancellor of Kerala Kalamandalam started their career in this department. The department promotes students to take part in Sanskrit events like Aksharasloka, Essay writing, Poem writing, Story writing, Elocution in D-Zone and Inter-zone level and has been providing training for the same since 2007. The department offers Mr. N.R. Sivaraman memorial cash award of a sum of Rs.5000/- to the student scoring highest marks in Degree Sanskrit examination. A sum of Rs 10,000/- was donated by Prof P.C.Varghese retired HOD , Department of Sanskrit to institute an endowment in his name, which is to be awarded to any student studying Sanskrit as part II who performs significantly in the D-Zone and Inter -Zone level cultural programmes, the adjudication to be made by the department of Sanskrit.
