2017-2018

Department organized an invited talk on “Strategies to slash our lifetime risk of developing or dying from cancer” by Dr Rajesh Kumar N. V. on 16^th August 2017.

Department conducted Padma Bhushan Fr. Gabriel Chiramel memorial Intercollegiate Biodiversity Quiz Competition on 18^th August 2017 for college students. Dr Sudhikumar A. V. was the coordinator and Dr Bijoy C was the quiz master.

Department organized BioBlitz 2017, a photo documentation competition of animal diversity of the Christ College Campus on 8^th December 2017 in which 19 students participated and winners were awarded prizes. Dr Bijoy C. was the coordinator.

Department organized a KSCSTE and KSBB sponsored National seminar on “Faunal Diversity and recent trends in animal Taxonomy” on 20^th and 21^st December 2017. Inaugural address was by Dr K. K. Joshi, head and Principal Scientist, CMFRI, Kochi and Technical sessions were handled by Dr John Prasath Jacob, Scientist F, IFGTB, Coimbatore; Dr P. M. Sureshan, Scientist D, ZSI, Calicut; Dr Aneesh E. M., St. Joseph’s College, Irinjalakuda and Dr Ramachandran Kotharambath, Central University of Kerala. A total of 116 participants and 31 research paper presentations. Dr Pius K. Jacob was the coordinator, Dr Sudhikumar A. V. was the convenor and Dr Abhilash Peter was the organizing Secretary.

2018-2019

In connection with World Environment Day 2018, Department of Zoology associated with Biodiversity club to conduct KSCSTE sponsored Invited talk on “from plastic religion to solid science” by Dr T. V. Sajeev, Senior Scientist E-1, KFRI, Peechi and an Intercollegiate Quiz competition on 5^th and 6^th June respectively. Dr Tessy Paul was the coordinator and Dr Bijoy C and Dr Manju N. J. were the Organizing Secretaries.

Department associated with Biodiversity Club to organize KSCSTE sponsored World Ozone Day Celebrations 2018. An invited lecture by Dr. Shijo Joseph, Senior Scientist of GIS and Remote Sensing, KFRI, Peechi on the topic “Understanding the climate, climate change and the ways to keep the climate cool” on 18^th September 2018. A poster competition and exhibition of posters on the theme: “Ozone Depletion and Climate Change” and an essay writing competition on the topic: “Significance of Ozone Day and Montreal Protocol was also conducted on 17^th September 2018. Dr Tessy Paul was the coordinator and Dr Bijoy C. was the Organizing Secretary.

In connection with wildlife week celebrations 2018, an intercollegiate Essay writing competition was conducted by the department as Prof. Dr V. V. Sudhakaran Endowment on 8^th October 2018. Dr Joshi C. O. and Dr Bijoy C. coordinated the programme. Topic: “Impact of natural calamities on wildlife”.

Department organized Rev. Fr. Isaac Alappat Endowment Seminar on the topic “Targeting Protein Prenylation in Pancreatic Cancer” on 13^th December 2018. Dr. Manu Aryan, Research Fellow of CSCB, Duke-NUS, Singapore presented the topic. Dr Leyon Varghese was the coordinator.

Launched Scholar Talk series inaugurated by Rev. Dr. Jolly Andrews CMI, Vice Principal on December 18^th 2018. Dr Binu R honoured on the occasion for achieving DST SERB TARE Fellowship and publishing a research article in Science. First talk of Sparkz was done by Mr. Sudhin P. P., CATE lab on the topic “Diversity and ecology of spiders in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary”. Dr Binu R. coordinated the programme.

As part of World Wetland Day celebrations 2019, Department of Zoology in association with Biodiversity club conducted a KSCSTE sponsored On-field Para-Taxonomy Workshop on “Faunal Diversity Documentation of Thommana Kole Wetlands” on 2^nd February 2019. Technical sessions were handled by Mr Sandeep Das (Bird Diversity and Conservation in wetlands of Kerala), Research Scholar, KFRI; Mr Divin Murukesh M. (Dragons and Damsels of wetlands- Understanding the life of Odonates); Dr C. P. Shaji (Ichthyological exploration in Thommana Wetlands) and Mr Manoj Karingamadathil (Role of citizens in Biodiversity documentation and conservation in Kole wetlands). There was a practical documentation session through which students were able to identify and document different species of birds, odonates and fishes. 65 students participated in this programme. Dr Bijoy C. was the coordinator of the programme.   

Department organized Prof. Dr. A. G. Govindankutty Memorial Lecture on the topic “Biodiversity and its conservation in the mangrove ecosystem of Kerala” on 21^st February 2019. Dr Muhammed Jaffer Palot, Assistant Zoologist, ZSI, Kozhikode delivered the lecture. Dr Joshi C. O. and Dr Binu R. coordinated the programme.

Department of Vocational Studies (B. Voc Food Processing Technology) in association with Department of Zoology organized a UGC sponsored seminar on “Food Production and Processing” on 22^nd March 2019. Dr Binu R. was the programme coordinator, Dr Leyon Varghese was the programme convenor and Dr Bijoy C. was the Organizing Secretary. Resource persons were Dr Sudheer K. P., KAU, Dr Nithin C. T., NIFPHTT, Cochin and Mr. Mohanan S., KAU.

2019-2020

Sparkz scholar talk series on July 18, 2019. Topic “Plant mediated vector control strategies: an arsenal to combat arboviral diseases” presented by Anoop Kumar A. N., CDRL lab. Dr Binu R. was the coordinator.

Sparkz scholar talk series on November 7, 2019. Topic “Larvicidal efficacy and synergetic study of phytoextract with chemical insecticides against Aedes aegypti” presented by Lakshmi K. V., CDRL lab. Dr Binu R. was the coordinator.

Department conducted an Intercollegiate PowerPoint Presentation competition on the topic “Are we in the midst of a sixth mass extinction” on 21^st November 2019 as part of Prof. V. V. Sudhakaran endowment. 10 students participated and the winners were awarded. Dr Bijoy C. coordinated the programme.  

In connection to World Wetland Day 2020, Department of Zoology and Biodiversity Club with technical assistance of ATREE organised a hands-on session and invited talk on “Biodiversity Documentation via India Biodiversity Portal” on 12^th February 2020. Session was handled by Mr. Anu Radhakrishnan, senior programme officer, ATREE and a BioBlitz competition was also conducted. Dr Bijoy C., coordinated the programme.

Sparkz scholar talk series on February 19, 2020. Topic “Diversity of spider fauna of the Great Indian Thar Desert” presented by Kashmeera N. A., CATE lab. Dr Binu R. was the coordinator.

Department organized Rev. Fr. Issac Alappat Endowment Seminar on the topic “Science behind prevalence of Metabolic Syndromes in Kerala” on 24^th February 2020. Dr Raghu K. G., Senior Principal Scientist and head of Agro Processing and Technology, CSIR-NIIST delivered the lecture. Dr Joshi C. O. coordinated the programme and Dr Binu R. was the convenor.

2020-2021

Department of Zoology and Department of Botany in association with Biodiversity club conducted an online Homestead Biodiversity Identification Contest in accordance with International Day for Biological Diversity on 22^nd May 2020. Dr Bijoy C. was the coordinator of the programme.

Sparkz scholar talk series on June 30, 2020. Topic “Pharmacological potential of Desmodium gangeticum and Tragia involucrate” presented via Google meet by Madhuri Menon, ImmTox Research Lab. Dr Binu R. was the coordinator.

Smriti Brain Research Lab, Department of Zoology organized an international webinar Synapses 2020 on the topic “The problem of trash disposal in neurodegenerative diseases” on 9^th July 2020. Dr Vinita Bharat from Stanford University, USA presented the talk and Dr Binu R. was the organizing Secretary.

Sparkz scholar talk series on August 20, 2020. Topic “Pharmacological potential of Legenandra toxicaria Dalzell and Kaempferia rotunda Linn.” presented via Google meet by Praveen K., ImmTox Research lab. Dr Binu R. was the coordinator.

Sparkz scholar talk series on August 27, 2020. Topic “Diversity and molecular characterization of gut content in mosquito larvae of Thrissur District” presented via Google meet by Lakshmi Jayakrishnan, CRRL Lab. Dr Binu R. was the coordinator.

Shadpada Entomology Research Lab, Department of Zoology organized an international webinar on the topic “Perspective of molecular approaches in Entomology” on 17^th September 2020. Dr K. B. Rebijith, Senior Scientist of MPI, New Zealand presented the talk and Dr Bijoy C. was the organizing Secretary.

Sparkz scholar talk series on 19^th September, 2020. Topic “Diversity and barcoding of mosquito species in Kole wetlands of Thrissur, Kerala” presented by Asha A. V., CDRL lab. Dr Binu R. was the coordinator.

Sparkz scholar talk series on 25^th September, 2020. Topic “Genetics of orofacial effect” presented via Google meet by Soumya Raj, ImmTox Research Lab. Dr Binu R. was the coordinator.

In Connection with Wildlife Week 2020, Department of Zoology and Department of Botany in association with Biodiversity club organized a webinar on the topic “Challenges in Biodiversity Conservation” on 15^th October 2020. Resource person, Dr P. A. Easa, retired director-in-charge, KFRI, Peechi, Thrissur. Dr Bijoy C. coordinated the programme.

Department and Wildlife Trust of India, Delhi NCR jointly organised an online talk on the title “Compassionate Conservation: Wild life Rehabilitation 101” on 11^th February 2021. Abhishek Narayanan, Head, wild Rescue Division, WTI was the speaker. Sajan John of WTI and Dr Bijoy C. were the coordinators and Dr C. O. Joshi convened the programme.

SERL, Department of Zoology organised a Meet the taxonomist programme for the research scholars on 22^nd February 2021. Chief guest was Dr Sajad Hussain Parey, expert of Indian Trichoptera who took a class on Indian Trichoptera. Dr Bijoy C. was the programme coordinator and Dr C. O. Joshi was the convenor of the programme.

Department of Zoology Collaborated with Carmel College, Mala for a student exchange programme in which students of Carmel visited the Department on 3^rd March 2021 and participated in Meet the Scientist programme. Dr C. O. Joshi was the coordinator of the programme.

A General Body Meeting of ZAAC (Zoology Alumni Association of Christ College) was organized at Chavara Seminar Hall on 13^th March 2021.

2021-2022

SERL, Department of Zoology and Biodiversity club organised a talk on The Buzz about Bees in connection with World Bee Day 2021 on May 20^th 2021. Ms. Anju Sara Prakash, SERL was the speaker. There was a Bee monitoring programme on 21^st May 2021 in which winners are awarded with certificates. Dr Bijoy C. coordinated the programme.

In connection with World Environment Day 2021, Department of Zoology in association with Department of Botany and Biodiversity club organized a webinar on Rare, endemic and threatened medicinal plants of Western Ghats and its conservation on 5^th June 2021.  Dr P. S. Udhayan handled the session. Dr Bijoy C. and Dr Tessy Paul were the coordinators.

Department of Zoology, Biodiversity club and Western Ghats Regional Centre, ZSI, Calicut jointly organised a National webinar on the “Restoration of coral reefs- the paradises and highly productive ecosystems of the oceans- Gulf of Kachchh a case study” in connection with World Ocean Day 2021 on 8^th June 2021. Dr Chowdula Satyanarayana Scientist D, ZSI, Chennai was the speaker. Dr Bijoy C. was the coordinator of the programme.

Department of Zoology in connection with World Blood Donor Day 2021, arranged a webinar on Blood donation by Dr Sreelakshmi C. S., Medical Officer, General Hospital, Irinjalakuda on 14^th June 2021. Dr Bijoy C. coordinated the programme.

Department of Zoology and Wildlife Trust of India, Delhi NCR jointly organised an online talk on the title “Ancient Mariners- the sea turtles” in connection with International Sea Turtle Day 2021 on 16^th June 2021. Sajan John, Head, Policy and Marine Projects, WTI was the speaker. Dr Bijoy C was the coordinator.

Department of Zoology and IQAC jointly organised a webinar on the topic “Methodology in Research and Academic writing” on 16^th June 2021. Dr Maya S., Professor, KVASU was the resource person.
