In the aided section, Malayalam is one of the second languages which can be selected by students of undergraduate courses. BA / B.Sc. students are required to study Malayalam in four semesters and B. Com students and non-traditional undergraduates in two semesters. The syllabi are designed in such a way that the students get a fair understanding of various genres of Malayalam literature and kerala culture. Ancient, medieval as well as modern phases of Malayalam literature are included in the syllabus. Fundamentals of Malayalam informatics is also part of the syllabus.
The prime target of the department is to culturally enhance the students by increasing their interest in their mother tongue and literature. We also focus on nurturing students' communicative and creative abilities. The department understands that democratic and vigilant students who care about the community are definitely an asset to the future. The department conducts programs to encourage students in curricular and co-curricular activities like ‘Fr. Chungan Kalalaya Ratna Award’ for the best student of Calicut University who excels in academic and non-academic fields, literary competitions and prizes at the college level, awards for students who top in the exams and opportunities to interact with experts in the field of art and culture.
