The Department of Mathematics was established in 1956 with Prof. P. P. Joseph as the Head of the Department. The undergraduate programme in Mathematics was started in 1963. It is one of the most prestigious departments in terms of acclaimed faculty and academic achievements. Students having high-scores in Plus-Two or equivalent, with Mathematics as one of the subjects are selected to this programme. Currently the strength of the BSc Mathematics is 48. The complementary courses are Statistics and Computer Science.
The Department was elevated to the status of a post graduate department in 2012. The specializations of the M.Sc. Mathematics programme are Cryptography, Differential Geometry, Advanced Complex Analysis, Commutative Algebra. The strength of the PG programme is 20.
The Department has produced many rank holders at the undergraduate level. The eminent and strong alumni and their active presence is the catalyst which drives the department towards excellence. Many students from the department have been placed in reputed firms through campus recruitment. A good number of students secure admission for higher studies in top ranked institutions every year.
