The Chemistry Department of Christ College, Irinjalakuda is one of the oldest Chemistry Departments in Kerala and started functioning with the very inception of Christ College in 1957 with B.Sc. Chemistry course. Post-graduate course in Chemistry was started in the year 1968 and in 1972 the Department was elevated to the status of a research centre. Seven students, who did Ph.D. work in this college have already been awarded Ph.D. degree by the Calicut University. The department ensures that basic BSc in Chemistry throws open salient avenues in terms of career options and equipping oneself for the competitive world of industry and academics. The academic and co-curricular activities of the department lay the foundation for brilliant careers in Chemistry.
Chemistry as a subject is interrelated with almost all branches of science. The department thus conducts activities that help build an excellent opportunity to form a career. The activities range from conducting intra and inter-college competitions, like Chem Quiz, Oral and Poster presentation competitions, to guiding student research projects. The department ensures students imbibe a research culture. In addition to visiting research centres and undertaking student research projects, students are guided on how to write a research article and present research papers at various competitions. Workshops are conducted on the applications and use of software to draw chemical structures. A large number of students pursue their higher studies at NIIST Thiruvananthapuram, IITs, NCL Pune, IICT Hyderabad, IISc Bangalore, BARC Mumbai etc. A number of our students have joined Doctoral and Post-Doctoral research work in various universities in U.S, Germany, Italy, Japan etc.
The department has four spacious Chemistry laboratories equipped with the required instruments like FT-It, UV-visible spectrometer, fluorescence spectrometer, Raman Spectrometer, electrochemical work station etc. The department also has a departmental library that provides an easy access to reference books.
